Abbe Value ($V$) and Chromatic Dispersion in Ophthalmic Dispensing

Named after physicist Ernst Abbe, the Abbe value ($V$-number) measures a transparent optical medium's chromatic dispersion—the variation of refractive index with wavelength. As white light passes through a lens, short blue wavelengths bend more acutely than long red wavelengths. The transverse chromatic aberration ($TCA$) experienced by a patient looking through the lens periphery is governed by:

TCA (Prism Diopters Δ) = (Distance from Optical Center in cm × Lens Power in D) / Abbe Value (V)

For high minus lenses (> -5.00D), materials with low Abbe values like Polycarbonate ($V=30$) can produce noticeable chromatic fringes (colored borders around high-contrast objects) when the wearer glances away from the optical center. In such cases, 1.60 High-Index (Abbe 42) or Trivex (Abbe 45) provides a superior optical experience.

Full-rim bezels completely encapsulate the lens perimeter, offering structural support and shielding fragile edge apexes. All lens materials (CR-39, 1.56, 1.60, 1.67, 1.74, Glass) are fully compatible.

Semi-Rimless (Nylon Cord Groove)

Semi-rimless frames require cutting a 0.6mm deep channel along the lens edge. Materials with high cross-linked polyurethane tensile resilience (1.60 High-Index, 1.67, and Trivex) resist edge chipping under cord tension. CR-39 and Glass should be avoided.

3-Piece Rimless Drill Mounts

Drill mounts subject lenses to severe point stress around screw fasteners. Trivex, 1.60, and 1.67 provide exceptional flexural strength. Polycarbonate is acceptable but sensitive to chemical stress crazing if cleaned with alcohol.
